Key Provisions of the Standard | GBT 50018-2025 “Technical Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Structures”

On April 21, 2025, the Ministry of Housing and Urban–Rural Development issued Announcement No. 66, approving the “Technical Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Structures” as a national standard, designated GB/T 50018-2025, which will come into effect on September 1, 2025, while simultaneously abolishing the previous standard GB 50018-2002. The Ministry of Housing and Urban–Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China.

This standard applies to the design, fabrication, installation, and acceptance of cold‑formed thin‑walled steel members (with wall thickness ≤ 6 mm) used in industrial and civil buildings, structures, and general steel structures. The key revision points are:

1. Updates to Materials and Design Specifications

Refine the grade, dimensions, and mechanical property specifications of cold‑formed steel sections, and introduce new application requirements for high‑strength cold‑formed steel.

Adjust the stability calculation method for structural members, and optimize the stability coefficients and cross-sectional utilization efficiency of flexural and compressive members.

Supplementary on the Material Properties and Protective Requirements of Cold-Formed Steel in Low-Temperature and Corrosive Environments

2. Connection and Structural Optimization

Detailed design and construction requirements for bolted connections, welded connections, and self-tapping screw connections.

Specific provisions have been added for the splicing of cold-formed steel members, joint reinforcement, and corrosion- and fire‑protection detailing.

Clearly define the design and installation key points for the enclosure system, wall beams, purlins, and bracing system.

3. Strengthening Construction and Acceptance Procedures

Standardize the manufacturing accuracy, dimensional tolerances, and surface quality requirements for cold-formed members.

Supplementary mandatory control criteria for installation deviations, component protection, and project acceptance.

Consistent with the mandatory provisions of the current “General Code for Steel Structures” GB 55006-2021, Ministry of Housing and Urban–Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China.

Cold‑formed steel structures are widely used in prefabricated residential buildings, industrial plants, warehouses, and enclosure systems. Following the implementation of the new standard, relevant design, construction, and supervision entities are required to comply with it, thereby ensuring structural safety and cost‑effectiveness.
